The idea first took root inside Zaki’s head when he was merely fifteen years old, a boy barely capable of growing facial hair (though that still hasn’t changed). He was frustrated, to say the least, without an audience to hear everything that he had to say. How could he take advantage of the vibrant community he lived in, engage it in carefree conversation, and ultimately make a public fool of himself through antics that went beyond making smartass comments to his teachers?
Zaki’s smallish head could barely contain the multitude of ideas that were swarming inside. He felt that he had just so much to share with the people, and so much laughter to bring back into their lives. But high school had an audience too limited; television was too expensive as a medium; and expressing thoughts through soulful, heart wrenching music was just too cliché.
And then it hit him. The cheapest, most innovative means to reach a large public was through the internet. It was so that Z Spot Radio came to be, beginning simply as a modest idea inside the mind of an ambitious boy. The idea was quickly set in motion: a website was made, a co-host was found, and a basement was reserved.
The online radio show was ready to be broadcasted, and with Waleed Ansari by his side, the two aired their first episode on October, 2006. A grand total of twelve people listened in, including family members who were obligated to show their support, friends who were handsomely bribed, and the one or two strangers who were held at gunpoint and forced to tune in.
Fortunately, Z Spot gained more listeners, some by threats, and some who, miraculously, wanted to participate willingly. But just as it reached its peak, with an astounding number of nearly 500 listeners tuning in, university came around the corner and Zaki and Waleed were forced to part ways. Forgoing the radio show for old school, desi valued education, Z Spot was shut down.
But now it’s back, bigger and badder than ever before. Just as its host, Zaki Zaheer, matured from a hairless, obnoxious kid to a hairless, obnoxious adult, so has Z Spot also evolved from an amusing hobby into a small business. So what does this mean for you? Z Spot is not just an opportunity for Zaki to reach out to the public, but for YOU to have your voice heard as well. It’s where all your dreams can come true, right after Disneyworld.
A kid with a tendency to talk too much and a passion for technology worked tirelessly to make his dream a reality. Z Spot is the grand product of his ambitions. |
